Job Description

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide primary support to the Director, Ground Safety and Security and all areas of the department. Provide secondary support to the Senior Manager, Flight and Maintenance Safety and Senior Manager, Regulatory Compliance.

Primary Duty Summary:

  • Lead Managers, Ground Safety and monitor ground safety and security programs in multiple hub and field city ground handling locations.
  • Investigate ground damage events, on-the-job-injuries (OJI), and regulatory findings. Identify the root cause of events and assist in the development of local corrective action plans.
  • Monitor effectiveness of local corrective action plans and enhance plans as required.
  • Coach leadership on the application of safety and ground damage prevention programs.
  • Develop and coordinate employee OJI tracking and reduction programs.
  • Work with supervisors and shift managers to ensure they are well versed and consistently apply all safety related procedures and programs.
  • Conduct site readiness visits on behalf of the airline for new aircraft type introduction to that market, to include the documentation and follow up of actions items identified during the Safety Risk Management process.
  • Conduct trend analysis of incidents for use in developing and initiating prevention plans and mitigation strategies.
  • Investigate and resolve Ground Safety Reports (GSRs).
  • Coordinate hub and key city safety recognition programs.
  • Develop and champion safety committees for the system and individual stations.
  • Conduct safety evaluations, audits, and inspections as needed to include Internal Evaluation Program (IEP) audits.
  • Support the Emergency Response Programs.
  • Actively supports the company's SMS (14 CFR Part 5).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:    

  • Extensive ramp and gate operational experience.
  • Experience conducting safety, accident/incident investigations.
  • Knowledge of relevant government regulations to include OSHA, TSA, FAA, EPA, etc.
  • Experience developing and initiating incident prevention programs.
  • A team player possessing the ability to work independently and excellent communication skills.
  • Strong inter-personal skills and the ability to get along with others. Confident, tactful, professional and flexible. Enjoys working with both front-line employees and management.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and desire to learn new automation tools.
  • Valid driver’s license.


Preferred Qualifications:        

  • Experience within an airline safety department.  
  • Experience managing others.
  • Regional airline experience.
  • Academic safety education or training.


Work Environment:    

  • Standard office environment. Use of computers and other office equipment.
  • Occasional travel is required.


Physical Requirements:  

Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds
