Job Description

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Vice President of Safety and Regulatory Compliance, the Director, Ground Safety and Security is responsible for leading the ground safety team and mentoring ground handling management to ensure and enhance compliance with safety and security procedures.

Primary Duty Summary:

  • Act as the liaison between the Safety and Ground Handling Departments.
  • Actively support the company's Safety Management System (SMS) (14 CFR Part 5).
  • Develop and initiate innovative ways to increase the level of safety and security throughout the ground handling organization.
  • Thoroughly manage the ground damage investigation and safety assurance process at all ground handling locations.
  • Regularly publish safety and security information through various means and creative methods.
  • Manage ground safety program at all locations to include oversight of Sr. Manager(s), Ground Safety and Manager(s), Ground Safety.
  • Assign projects, tasks, follow up to Sr. Manager(s), Ground Safety and Manager(s), Ground Safety based on department needs and trends regarding regulatory non-compliance to include OSHA, environmental, security, ground damage and on-the-job-injury (OJI) data.
  • Program management of the ground handling employee injury and ground damage prevention programs.
  • Develop and monitor programs designed for ground handling leadership on the application of safety procedures and ground damage prevention programs.
  • Oversee employee OJI investigations, root cause identification, trend analysis and reduction programs.
  • Assist in development and monitoring of local corrective action plans in response to company and regulatory agency findings, to include composing responses to reporting agencies.
  • Be a liaison between the company, other ground handling providers, regulatory agencies and other airlines regarding ground safety and security issues and incidents.
  • Manage Ground Safety Reports (GSRs) investigations and follow up actions.
  • Review and manage hub and key city safety recognition programs.
  • Develop and champion safety committees for the system and individual locations.
  • Support the Emergency Response Programs.
  • Conduct safety evaluations, audits, and inspections as needed.
  • Develop and manage relevant budget.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:    


  • Academic safety education or training.
  • Experience within an airline safety department managing people and programs.  
  • Regional airline experience.
  • Extensive ramp and gate management experience.
  • Experience leading and managing safety, security and accident/incident investigations.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant government regulations to include OSHA, TSA, FAA, EPA, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing innovative incident prevention and safety recognition programs.
  • A team player possessing the ability to work independently and excellent communication skills.
  • Strong inter-personal skills with the ability to defuse difficult situations and manage personnel related issues.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and desire to learn new automation tools.
  • Valid Driver’s License


Preferred Qualifications:        

  • Ability to automate processes.
  • Budgeting experience.


Work Environment:    

  • Standard office environment. Use of computers and other office equipment.
  • Occasional travel is required


Physical Requirements:  

Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds
